Valuing real pleasure

April 13th, 2017|Spiritual Disciplines, The Christian Life|0 Comments

In his book, "Screwtape Letters", C. S. Lewis tells the story of a senior demon named Screwtape who writes a series of thirty-one letters to his nephew, Wormwood. Wormwood has been tasked to darken the soul of a man known as "the patient," and turn him away from "the Enemy" (G0d). The letters contain advice on how to manipulate the patient. One of my favorite sections is toward the end is when Screwtape tells his young protegé how he made two key errors, which led to [...]

Endurance and perseverance

March 27th, 2017|Spiritual Disciplines, The Christian Life|0 Comments

Am I simply enduring or am I persevering? Enduring is tolerating the pain or situation. Perseverance is endurance combined with the absolute certainty that God will come through. It means to continue in spite of difficulty and lack of success. Endurance is accepting a situation, whereas perseverance carries the idea of action. It involves endurance but is much more intentional and less "white knuckled". Chambers writes of perseverance: “Perseverance means more than just hanging on, which may be only exposing our fear of letting go [...]

Spiritual service and abiding

March 9th, 2017|Spiritual Disciplines, The Christian Life|0 Comments

Oswald Chambers writes: Beware of anything that competes with your loyalty to Jesus Christ. The greatest competitor of true devotion to Jesus is the service we do for Him. It is easier to serve than to pour out our lives completely for Him. The goal of the call of God is His satisfaction, not simply that we should do something for Him. We are not sent to do battle for God, but to be used by God in His battles. Are we more devoted to [...]

What the eye illuminates

March 1st, 2017|Spiritual Disciplines, The Christian Life|0 Comments

The eye is the lamp of the body. If then your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. In Matthew 6 this verse is sandwiched between discussing a focus on money and a focus on anxiety. It's as if Jesus is placing this guard rail in the place where we need it most.  For who among us does not wrestle with the lure of possessions and the power that comes with money? And who among us does not contend with the [...]

Margin

February 23rd, 2017|Planning, Spiritual Disciplines, The Christian Life|0 Comments

There are many things that can keep us from responding to God’s call to become fellow workers with Him, but for many who grapple daily with the chaos of modern life, time is a major impediment. Because there are no easy answers, the temptation for us is to forget the whole idea. What we need is margin. Margin is the extra space between the things we must do and our capacity. When we use up all that space, there is no margin. When extra demands [...]

Ephesians One

January 31st, 2017|Character, Spiritual Disciplines|0 Comments

One of the exercises I've used from time to time to get a better sense of what Scripture is saying, is to reword or rewrite the verses in my own words. I did this with Ephesians chapter one and it helped illumine the Scriptures. This is not a version, or even a paraphrase as much as it is an aid to help me gain better understanding. It's a good exercise, if you've never tried it. Ephesians 1 God is inherently worthy of praise. He, the father [...]

Silence and Solitude

January 26th, 2017|Character, Spiritual Disciplines, The Christian Life|0 Comments

Acts 4:13 “Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John, and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled, and recognized that they had been with Jesus.” The longer I am a Christian, the more amazed I become with how little time we actually spend alone with God. Yet all that we are, anything we might accomplish in life that is worthwhile, grows out of the time we spend with Him. John 15:4 tells us that “as the branch cannot bear [...]

How God Builds Character

January 18th, 2017|Character, Spiritual Disciplines|0 Comments

Character. It's not a term I hear much these days. When is the last time you heard someone described as a man or woman of good character? The dictionary defines character as the aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing; moral or ethical quality; qualities of honesty, courage, or the like; integrity; reputation I like this definition. Character is the testing or proving of you. In other words, when we go through the fires of life, character [...]

Doorposts

What do you set your mind on? In Deuteronomy 6, God is instructing the nation of Israel to help them keep His commandments. "Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the LORD your God has commanded me to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you are going over to possess it, so that you and your son and your grandson might fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I [...]
